Bougainvillea plants perform best in full sun with the roots confined in the pot. A balcony, patio or sunroom would be ideal.
Bougainvillea plants need a bright sunny spot indoors. Outdoors they will tolerate some shade but still require 5 hours of direct sunlight daily.
When kept wet for long periods, the Bougainvillea will not flower. Instead, it will produce a huge amount of foliage .This can be a problem when planted directly in the garden during a wet summer. Try to let the soil dry up before watering again but avoid allowing the plant to wilt.
After blooming, trim your bougainvillea back to a shape you like, and it will grow and bloom again. When a Bougainvillea is in full bloom it will stop growing. The flowers have to fall off first before new shoots will appear. This is a good time to do some trimming, to keep your plant in shape.
The bougainvillea plant can go safely outdoors when the night temperature remains steadily above freezing (you may want to take it indoors for a cold night) where it will blossom until the fall. Over winter, keep the plant in an area above 40 F (4 C) and only slightly moist.
